Color Sorting Activity for Toddlers - Farm Fresh Family

We’ve been working with Clare on color recognition a lot lately, but I didn’t realize how much progress she’s made until we did this activity today!

To do this activity I just pulled out the pom poms I picked up at the dollar store last week and my trusty silicone cupcake liners (you’ve seen them before in my bento boxes.) Strangely enough, the colors matched almost exactly! Woohoo!

Clare started sorting with very little prompting!

Picking up the little pom poms was great for practicing those fine motor skills!

She did a great job of naming the colors when she placed the pom poms in the cups!

Yay Clare!!!!

It’s so fun to watch her learn!

I am the proud mama of a beautiful, hilarious little girl and the proud partner of a kind, smart man. The three of us have decided to make a major lifestyle change and move from Fort Collins, CO to an organic farm in southwest Colorado. We hope that by being surrounded by nature's beauty and working with our hands, we will be reminded daily that the simplest things in life are the most important. I learn big and small lessons every day, and I want to share what I've learned with other families.

  1. Great idea with the poms and muffin cups! We do something similar with construction paper and mega blocks. My 2 year old loves it.

  2. Great idea! I need to do more of this with my little guy. Poor second child is kind of neglected, well at least compared to what I was doing with his older sister. Ha! 🙂 – Bre @ Average But Inspired

  3. What a fun activity for the little ones! My guy Just under two, is a bit messy with crafts, so I struggle to find good ideas which won’t end up in a huge mess all over the house. Must try!

  4. My son would really enjoy doing this. I’m always looking for easy ideas to use a home with him and this is a great skill in preparation for preschool and kindergarten. I love the idea behind your blog and your little girl is so cute, by the way. 🙂

    • I’m glad you like it! This was definitely a very easy idea that could be done lots of different ways with many different materials. And thanks for the compliment about my daughter, I think she’s pretty cute too 🙂

  5. Thanks again for hosting Let’s Get Real this week with us. It’s a pleasure to have you join us. Your Clare is so darn cute! This looks like an expensive learning game because your colors match so perfectly.

    • I know! I lucked out with the colors. I just picked up the pom poms without thinking too much about it and it turned out they matched perfectly. I love it when things work out like that 🙂 Thanks again for the opportunity to co-host! I had fun.

  6. I need to get some of those silicone liners! They are so cool 🙂 Thanks for joining us on Let’s Get Real.

  7. Thanks for co-hosting the Let’s Get Real Friday Party with us this week. You’re daughter is adorable. When my children were younger, we did something similar. Learning like this is so much fun.

  8. This is a great idea! I definitely need to do it with Eli, he loves colors and doing fun things like this. Plus he loves those little pompoms 😉 Thanks so much for linking up at the MaMade Blog Hop! Don’t forget to stop back and link up again next week and see if you’ve been featured!

  9. Happy to have you co-hosting Let’s Get Real with us this week!
